ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE VISUAL QUALITY OF ROADWAY DESIGN
SOME EFFORTS IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF VISUAL QUALITY ARE DESCRIBED. THE FACILITIES DESCRIBED ARE FUNCTIONAL IN CHARACTER, RETAIN FEATURES OF THE NATURAL TERRAIN AND INTRODUCE NEW AND PLEASANT EXPERIENCES TO DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND NONMOTORISTS ALIKE. THREE CATEGORIES THAT REFER TO THE CLASS OF INDIVIDUALS WHOM THE ACHIEVEMENTS BENEFIT ARE: THE VEHICLE DRIVERS; THE PASSENGER; AND THE NONMOTORIST. A MAJOR CONSTRAINT IN OFFERING VISUAL EXPERIENCES CONCERNS THE NEED TO MAINTAIN SAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. TREATMENTS SUCH AS SPARSE PLANTING OF TREES IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE RAMP AND THE MAIN LINE CAN ENHANCE THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF APPROACH WITHOUT JEOPARDIZING THE SAFETY OF MERGING VEHICLES. A MEANS OF ACCOMPLISHING SETBACK WITHOUT INTRODUCING THE BARREN LOOK IS ILLUSTRATED. THE USE OF HORIZONTIAL GEOMETRY TO IMPROVE VISUAL QUALITY IS DESCRIBED. VISUAL AMENITY MAY BE CREATED THROUGH THE USE OF NATURAL ELEMENTS SUCH AS ROCK FORMATIONS IN THE RIGHT OF WAY THAT CAN BE LEFT IN PLACE. A PHOTOGRAPH ILLUSTRATES A GRADUAL SLOPE THAT IMPROVED THE SHORELINE AND INCREASED THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF A SMALL LAKE AND FOREST WITHOUT INTRODUCING FOREIGN ELEMENTS. THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE VISUAL EXPERIANCE OF LOCAL RESIDENTS IS DISCUSSED AND THE PRESERVATION OF THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF AN ATTRACTIVE GLADE IN AN AREA, BY USE OF A ROCK RETAINING WALL, DISCRETE SIGNING AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A LOW WOODEN RAILING, IS DESCRIBED. ALSO OUTLINED IS A CHANNELIZATION PROJECT WHICH HAS BECOME A PERMANENT FEATURE OF THE COMMUNITY AND ACCOMODATES BOTH PEDESTRIANS AND MOTORISTS.
