COMPUTER-AIDED TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR SELECTION IN THE GUELPH-DUNDAS AREA OF ONTARIO

COMPUTER-AIDED REGIONAL LOCATION METHODS CONTAIN GREATER FLEXIBILITY THAN THE GRAPHICAL METHODS. MODELS ARE STORED IN NUMERICAL FORM AS MATRICES WITHIN THE COMPUTER AND IF THEY ARE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF CODES THAT REPRESENT NATURAL OR CULTURAL CONDITIONS, VALUES CAN BE ASSIGNED AND NUMERICAL "COST MODELS" CAN BE CONSTRUCTED. THE LATTER CAN BE ANALYZED BY MINIMUM PATH TECHNIQUES TO PRODUCE A RANKED SERIES OF ALTERNATIVES. THE NUMERICAL MODELS MAY BE COMBINED IN KNOWN PROPORTIONS BY MEANS OF WEIGHTING FACTORS SO AS TO EMPHASIZE CERTAIN FACTORS OR GROUPS OF FACTORS. THE VARIOUS FACTOR MODELS REPRESENT DATA BANKS (WHICH MAY BE REVISED AND UPDATED) WHICH CAN BE USED FOR A NUMBER OF PURPOSES FOR WHICH ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION IS REQUIRED. THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF THE GENERALIZED COMPUTER-AIDED ROUTE SELECTION SYSTEM (GCARS) ARE ILLUSTRATED AND DISCUSSED. THE APPLICATION OF THE SYSTEM TO A SPECIFIC AREA IS DESCRIBED. A LAND INVENTORY INITIATED BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT IN WHICH THE DATA COLLECTED WAS PLOTTED ON MAPS, IS OUTLINED. SEVEN FACTOR MODELS WERE DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED. GENERATION AND ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVES IS DISCUSSED. RESULTS OF THE GCARS ANALYSES (WHICH WERE COMPLETED IN ONE-QUARTER OF THE TIME) AGREED WITH THOSE OF MANUAL ANALYSES. THE USE OF THE COMPUTER IN ROUTE SELECTION IS JUSTIFIED ECONOMICALLY. IT IS ALSO A MORE COMPREHENSIVE AND QUANTIFIABLE ANALYSIS PROVIDING DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF FACTOR INTERACTIONS AND A RANKED SERIES OF ALTERNATIVES. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT SIMPLE DATA DIGITALIZATION PROCESSES COULD BE USED ECONOMICALLY TO PRODUCE NUMERICAL MODELS OF THE VARIOUS FACTORS THAT COULD BE COMPUTER PROCESSED. DESIRABLE ADDITIONS TO THE GCARS ARE BEING DEVELOPED AND TESTED.
