DIGITAL COMPUTERS IN CIRCULAR CULVERT DESIGN
AS CIRCULAR CULVERTS MAY HAVE SECTIONS OF DIFFERENT SLOPES, LENGTHS, AND PIPE SIZES, FLOW PROFILE AND HYDRAULIC JUMP CALCULATIONS ARE EXTREMELY TEDIOUS AND TIME CONSUMING. A DIGITAL COMPUTER IS USEFUL IN CULVERT DESIGN BY PERFORMING FLOW PROFILE CALCULATIONS, DETERMINING IF A HYDRAULIC JUMP OCCURS IN THE CULVERT, AND PREDICTING THE JUMP LOCATION. THIS PAPER SETS FORTH SOME RECENT DEVELOPMENTS ON THE USE OF DIGITAL COMPUTERS IN CULVERT DESIGN WHICH SHOULD EXPEDITE COMPUTATIONS AND REDUCE OVERALL COSTS. THE TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT BROKEN-BACK CULVERT IS USED FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES.
