ENGINEERING SYSTEMS: AN OVERVIEW

THE AUTHOR HAS COMPILED THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF A LARGE NUMBER OF AUTOMATED ENGINEERING SYSTEMS IN CURRENT USE, WHICH HE DISCUSSES IN DETAIL, AND FROM THESE HAS ANTICIPATED CERTAIN FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS. THE PRINCIPAL FOCUS IS ON TIES, WHOSE ORIGINAL PURPOSE WAS TO INTEGRATE ALL OF THE MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF HIGHWAY BUILDING: PLANNING, LOCATION, RIGHT-OF- WAY DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND MAINTENANCE. THE MAJOR EFFORT TO DATE HAS BEEN CONCENTRATED ON THE DESIGN SUBSYSTEM, COMPRISING ROADWAY BRIDGE, HYDRAULICS, AND INTERCHANGE DESIGN. THE TEXAS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT IS DEVELOPING THE ROADWAY DESIGN COMPONENT, WHILE THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION, IN COOPERATION WITH THE STATE UNIVERSITY, IS STUDYING A ROADWAY SIMULATION SYSTEM THAT WILL ALLOW THE ENGINEER TO DETERMINE AND CHANGE THE OPERATIONAL CAPACITY OF A PROPOSED ROADWAY. SEVERAL STATES ARE USING COMPUTERS TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF RIGHT-OF-WAY ACQUISITION. PENNSYLVANIA IS APPLYING COMPUTERS TO PREDICTION OF ACQUISITION TIME AND COST. ENGINEERS IN NEW YORK HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE BRIDGE DESIGNING SEGMENT OF TIES AND HAVE DEVELOPED AN INTEGRATED BRIDGE DESIGN SYSTEM THAT WILL DO MOST OF THE DESIGN WORK AND SOME OF THE PLOTTING FOR RELATIVELY SIMPLE BRIDGES. THE ILLINOIS DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS IS IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING A COMPUTERIZED HIGHWAY BRIDGE RATING SYSTEM. THE CENTER FOR HIGHWAY RESEARCH IN AUSTIN, TEXAS, IS WORKING ON A PAVEMENT DESIGN SYSTEM.
