MOMENTS IN SIMPLY SUPPORTED SKEW SLABS PART 1, CURVATURE METER DESIGN AND EVALUATION

CURVATURE METERS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH WERE DEVELOPED AS A PART OF A PROJECT TO EVALUATE MOMENTS IN SKEW SLABS. THE METERS WERE USED TO EVALUATE BENDING MOMENTS IN GLASS PLATE MODELS. THE METHODS OF APPLICATION, MEASUREMENT AND CALIBRATION ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH AN EQUILIBRIUM TEST TO VALIDATE THE MOMENT VALUES OBTAINED FROM MEASURE- MENTS. SOME DISADVANTAGES OF THE METERS ARE DISCUSSED WHICH INCLUDE THE CURING TIME FOR THE MOUNTING ADHESIVE, AND THE SIZE OF THE UNIT WHICH LIMITS THEIR USE NEAR EDGES AND SUP- PORTS. IT IS CONCLUDED, HOWEVER, THAT THE METERS WHICH WERE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR STUDIES ON MODEL BRIDGES, ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR USE ON THE BASIS OF AN EQUILIBRIUM CHECK ON A SKEW PLATE. PERFORMANCE OF THE METERS IS LIMITED BY THE DEFORMATION OCCURRING IN THE MODEL. THIS WAS INTERPRETED AS CORRESPONDING TO AN INFLUENCE COEFFICIENT FOR MOMENT OF 0.02 FOR THE 3/8 IN. THICK PLATE GLASS MODEL USED. APPENDICES ARE INCLUDED WHICH DESCRIBE THE PROCEDURE FOR MOUNTING THE CURVATURE METERS AND THE OPERATION OF THE DISPLACEMENT TRANSDUCERS. /DOHC/
