PERFORMANCE CRITERIA FOR A UNIVERSAL HF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
With the great variety of HF applications found in the industry, there is a growing need for equipment that can be used on Single Sideband, AME, full break in CW, radio teletype, and Facsimile. Since many users in the Maritime Mobile Service actually require several of these modes, it is desirable to combine as many modes as possible in a single unit. This provides several additional benefits in the form of capital investment savings, reduced maintenance costs, minimizing the space required to house equipment, reducing the number of antenna systems required, and simplified operator training. While these benefits certainly inhance the desirability of developing a universal HF Communications system, they also create several problems that increase the complexity of the system, thus, demanding more stringent performance standards. Among those parameters subject to tighter standards are the following: frequency stability, carrier suppression, unwanted sideband suppression, keying wave form, envelope compression response, transmitter noise spectrum, transmitter and receiver bandwidth, and tuning range of the antenna system. This paper shall examine the effect that these problems have on an HF Communications System and the practical engineering solutions that may be applied to them.
