AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OF TWO-WAY CONTINUOUS BRIDGE SLABS SUBJECTED TO CONCENTRATED LOADS

THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF CONTINUOUS TWO-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SQUARE SLABS IS INVESTIGATED. MODELS OF THESE SLABS, FORMING PART OF A TWO-LANE TOW-GIRDER BRIDGE, WERE TESTED UNDER A SINGLE CONCENTRATED LOAD. THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OBTAINED IS STUDIED IN RELATION TO REINFORCEMENT PERCENTAGE AND LOCATION OF LOAD. IN THE SLABS TESTED, DIFFERENT BOUNDARY CONDITIONS EXISTED, AND THE EFFECTS OF SUCH BOUNDARY CONDITIONS WERE INCORPORATED IN THE STUDY OF SHEAR AND FLEXURAL STRENGTHS OF THE SLABS. COMPRESSIVE MEMBRANE ACTION IN FIXED TWO-WAY SLABS SUPPORTED BY NON-RIGID EDGE BEAMS IS ALSO STUDIED, AND A METHOD FOR ESTIMATING THE COMPRESSIVE MEMBRANE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ULTIMATE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF THESE SLABS IS PROPOSED, AND VERIFIED BY A STUDY OF A NUMBER OF SLABS FAILING IN FLEXURE. EXCELLENT CORRELATION WS OBTAINED ON A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH WHICH INCLUDES MEMBRANE ENHANCEMENT. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE PRESENT DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR BRIDGE SLABS IS TOO CONCERVATIVE AND THAT YIELD LINE METHOD CAN BE SAFELY AND ECONOMICALLY APPLIED TO THE DESIGN OF SUCH SLABS. A MINIMUM REINFORCEMENT PERCENTAGE FOR BRIDGE SLABS IS PROPOSED. IT WAS DEMONSTRATED IN THE TESTS THAT MODELS AS SMALL AS 1/15 SCALE MAY BE USED IN SUTIDES OF PUNCHING STRENGTH OF SLABS. /AUTHOR/
