BRIDGE OVER THE PELOTAS RIVER, AFTER THE FIRST WAS DESTROYED BY A FLOOD ON THE 18TH OF AUGUST 1965

THE EMERGENCY MEASURES TAKEN AFTER THE BRIDGE OVER THE PELOTAS RIVER IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL WAS DESTROYED BY A FLOOD ARE DESCRIBED. SPECIAL EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO THE SUBSEQUENT CONSTRUCTION OF A PERMANENT BRIDGE. THIS BRIDGE IS A PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURE WITH A HOLLOW CROSS SECTION AND IS ANCHORED IN THE ROCKY BANKS OF THE RIVER. THE MAIN SPAN IS 189 METERS WITH A TOTAL LENGTH OF 250 METERS AND A WIDTH 750 CENTIMETERS. THE SUCESSIVE CANTILEVER METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION WAS USED. THE MORE INTERESTING ASPECTS ARE PRESENTED OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. METHODS OF QUALITY CONTROL AND CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED AND THE MEANS OF APPLYING THE PRESTRESS. A SUMMARY STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE CAUSES OF THE RESULTANT LOSS OF PRESTRESS AND HOW THIS PHENOMENOM WAS CONSIDERED IN THIS CASE. /RRI/
