BIBLIOGRAPHY-BENDING OF ANISOTROPIC PLATES
A BIBLIOGRAPHY WAS PREPARED OF PRIOR RESEARCH ON ANISOTROPIC PLATES WITH EMPHASIS UPON SOLUTION OF THE BENDING PROBLEM. SELECTED PAPERS WERE REVIEWED ON: ORTHOTROPIC PLATE THEORY, AND PAPERS WHICH TREAT PLATES AS GRILLAGES. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PRESENTED IN THE APPENDIX. MOST OF THE PAPERS REVIEWED WERE CONCERNED WITH STEEL PLATES HAVING ORTHOGONALLY ORIENTED STIFFENERS. THE MATHEMATICAL ANALYSES OF ELASTIC ORTHOTROPIC PLATES CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES: (1) THE SMALL DEFLECTION THIN PLATE EQUATION MODIFIED IS UTILIZED TO ACCOUNT FOR THE DIFFERENT FLEXURAL RIGIDITIES IN THE ORTHOGONAL DIRECTIONS, AND (2) THE ORTHOTROPIC PLATE IS TREATED AS AN EQUIVALENT GRILLAGE. THE ASSUMPTIONS MADE BY HUBER IN THE FIRST ANALYSIS ON AN EXACT THEORY OF ORTHOTROPIC PLATES ARE DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED. CORNELIUS USED HUBER'S ORTHOTROPIC PLATE THEORY AS THE BASIS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF BRIDGE STRUCTURES. THIS WORK WAS EXTENDED BY MADER WHO PRESENTED SOLUTIONS FOR FULLY OR PARTIALLY UNIFORMLY LOADED RECTANGULAR PLATES. AN ORTHOTROPIC PLATE THEORY WHICH ACCOUNTS MORE ACCURATELY FOR THE ECCENTRICITY OF THE STIFFENERS WAS DEVELOPED BY PFLUEGER. ALTHOUGH A MAJORITY OF THE PAPERS HAVE BEEN CONCERNED WITH THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF ORTHOGONALLY STIFFENED BRIDGE DECKS, THERE HAVE BEEN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE INVESTIGATION OF SKEW BRIDGES. THESE PAPERS ASSUME THAT THE PRINCIPAL AXES OF ANISOTROPY ARE PARALLEL TO THE EDGES OF THE PLATE OR DECK. NO PAPER WAS FOUND WHICH DID NOT DEAL WITH PLATES REINFORCED BY STIFFENERS PARALLEL TO THE SUPPORT EDGES. THE ANALYSES OF IDEALIZED GRILLAGE MAY BE PLACED INTO TWO GROUPS: (1) THE STIFFENED PLATE IS REPLACED BY A FRAMEWORK OF INTERSECTING BARS WHOSE STIFFNESSES ARE ADJUSTED TO APPROXIMATE THOSE OF THE STIFFENED PLATE, AND (2) THE STIFFENED PLATE IS REPLACED BY A SYSTEM OF FINITE PLATE ELEMENTS FOR WHICH STIFFNESS COEFFICIENTS ARE DEVELOPED TO APPROXIMATE THE ACTUAL SYSTEM. THE FINITE ELEMENT APPROACH APPEARS TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE THAN OTHER ANALYTIC PROCEDURES REVIEWED. THE RELEVANT SIMPLICITY OF TREATING PROBLEMS WITH IRREGULAR BOUNDARIES MAKES IT PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX STRUCTURES.
