DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF ELASTO-INELASTIC STRUCTURES

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP NUMERICAL METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF STRUCTURES BEYOND THE ELASTIC RANGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS. STUDIES WERE MADE OF: (1) INELASTIC RESPONSE OF TIMOSHENKO BEAMS, (2) THE LARGE DISPLACEMENT ANALYSIS OF ELASTO-PLASTIC BEAMS SUBJECTED TO MOVING MASS LOADS, (3) THE LARGE DISPLACEMENT RESPONSE OF INELASTIC BEAM-COLUMNS, AND (4) THE NONLINEAR RESPONSE OF SPACE FRAMES. A NUMERICAL METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR THE COMPUTATION OF THE TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF SPACE FRAMES BEYOND THE ELASTIC RANGE. THE PROCEDURE INTRODUCES, FOR THE LUMPING OF THE MASS, THE PARAMETER WHICH CONTROLS THE VALUES OF THE MOMENTS AND PRODUCTS OF INERTIA OF THE JOINT RIGID BODIES. THE TREATMENT OF THE INELASTIC ACTION IS BASED ON THE PLASTIC POTENTIAL THEORY. THE PRESENT ANALYSIS NEGLECTS THE EFFECTS OF GEOMETRY CHANGES. THEREFORE, THE METHOD PRESENTED MUST BE REGARDED AS ONLY A TOOL TO OBTAIN AN APPROXIMATE SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM CONSIDERED.
