ON MARITIME VHF/UHF NOTCH AERIAL SYSTEMS

The standard dipole normally used for VHF communications on marine vehicles suffers from many disadvantages from the operators point of view-typical of these are (a) the frequent need to change the aerials due to damage in adverse weather conditions, and (b) the inability of these aerials to produce a reasonably omnidirectional polar diagram when sited in the usual position at the yardarm of vessels amidst the top hamper encountered in most merchant vessels. This lecture paper gives details of the theory, design, performance and typical installation of a marine aerial system capable of producing a near ideal radiation pattern and suitable for VHF communications specifically in the band 156-162 MHz. Other frequency bands can be accommodated and indeed a system covering the entire UHF bank of 225-400 MHz is currently undergoing trials.
