THE ANALYSIS OF SINGLE CURVED GIRDERS WITH VARIOUS LOADINGS AND BOUNDARY CONDITINS. THE DESIGN OF CURVED VIADUCTS

METHODS DEVELOPED TO ANALYZE CURVED GIRDERS, EACH WITH ITS OWN LIMITATIONS, ARE REVIEWED. A METHOD IS DEVELOPED THAT IS INTENDED TO BE AS SOPHISTICATED AS POSSIBLE CONCERNING THE TYPES OF LOADINGS, SUPPORT CONDITIONS, AND TYPE OF BEAM TO BE ANALYZED. TWO SIMULTANEOUS, LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS OF CURVED GIRDER BEHAVIOR WERE DERIVED. THE MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT IS USEFUL IN EXAMINING THE EFFECTS OF BOUNDARY CONDITIONS AND SECTIONAL PROPERTIES UNDER LOADINGS. THESE DATA CAN THEN BE RELATED TO INTERACTING PLATE GIRDER SYSTEMS, HAVING SIMILAR BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. THE EFFECTS OF CONSIDERING A TOTAL SYSTEM THEN CAN BE COMPARED TO THE SINGLE GIRDER ANALYSIS IN ORDER TO SEE THE EFFECTS OF LOAD DISTRIBUTION. THE GENERAL SOLUTION TO THE LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WAS INCORPORATED INTO DIFFERENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS, USING APPROPRIATE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. COMPARISONS WERE MADE WITH OTHER METHODS OF DEFLECTABILITY, GENERALITY, AND CONVENIENCE OF METHODS. AN EXPERIMENTAL BEAM WAS TESTED UNDER DIFFERENT LOADINGS AND THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE THEORY CAN PREDICT THE BEHAVIOR OF A SINGLE CURVED GIRDER. A COMPARISON WAS MADE BETWEEN THE EFFECTS OF LOADING ON A SINGLE BEAM, AND ON THAT SAME BEAM WHEN IT IS PART OF A PLATE-GIRDER SYSTEM.
