THE SOLUTION OF CURVED BRIDGE SYSTEMS USING THE SLOPE- DEFLECTION FOURIER SERIES METHOD. THE DESIGN OF CURVED VIADUCTS
A SLOPE-DEFLECTION FOURIER SERIES METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ANALYZE A CONTINUOUS ORTHOTROPIC DECK ON CURVED FLEXIBLE GIRDERS. THE METHOD DETERMINES THE BRIDGE DEFLECTIONS, SLOPES AND INTERNAL GIRDER FORCES AT ANY LOCATION ON THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE. THE GENERAL SOLUTION IS ANALOGOUS TO THE SLOPE-DEFLECTION METHOD APPLIED TO PLANER RIGID FRAMES. SLOPE-DEFLECTION EXPRESSIONS WERE DERIVED AND A BASIC SLOPE-DEFLECTION MATRIX FORMED. THE BASIC MATRIX WAS MODIFIED BY THE ADDITION OF STIFFNESS TERMS IN ORDER TO INCORPORATE GIRDER WARPING STIFFNESS AND RADIAL DIAPHRAGMS. THE SOLUTION OF THE FINAL MATRIX OF TERMS YIELDED TOE SLOPES AND FLECTIONS AT ANY POINT ALONG THE CURVED GIRDERS. THE SLOPES AND DEFLECTIONS WERE THEN UED TO OBTAIN THE FINAL GIRDER SHEARING FORCES, BENDING AND TORSIONAL MOMENTS. THE INTERNAL FORCES ARE OBTAINED FROM A TERM BY TERM SOLUTION. COMPLETE SOLUTIONS USING THE SLOPE-DEFLECTION FOURIER SERIES METHOD HAVE BEEN OBTAINED FROM SINGLE SPAN AND TWO SPAN CONTINUOUS COMPUTER PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAMS WILL COMPUTE GIRDER SLOPES, DEFLECTIONS, AND INTERNAL FORCES FOR ANY NUMBER OF CONCENTRATED AND/OR UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED LOAD. A NUMBER OF LIMITING CASES WERE STUDIED TO VALIDATE THE DEVELOPED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES. THE METHOD PRODUCED NEARLY EXACT AGREEMENT WHEN COMPARED TO THE STRAIGHT GIRDER BRIDGE AND THE SINGLE CURVED GIRDER SOLUTIONS DEVELOPED ELSEWHERE. THE EXPERIMENTAL DEFLECTIONS FROM A STIFFENED PLATE MODEL WERE COMPARED TO THOSE OF THE SLOPE-DEFLECTION ANALYSIS. GOOD CORRELATION WAS OBTAINED FOR BOTH ARC CONFIGURATIONS OF THE MANY CASES TESTED.
