A SYSTEM FOR THE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF HIGHWAY BRIDGE GIRDERS: AUTOMATED DESIGN I, VOLUME TWO MAINTENANCE MANUAL

A COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED TO OBTAIN ON A ROUTINE BASIS THE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF A CONSTANT-DEPTH, CONTINUOUS, WELDED, HIGHWAY BRIDGE, PLATE GIRDER. OPTIMIZATION CAN BE BASED ON EITHER COST OR WEIGHT AT THE CHOICE OF THE ENGINEER. THE ENGINEER CAN ALSO PREASSIGN SOME OF THE DESIGN VARIABLES IF HE SO CHOOSES. THE STEEL TYPE USED CAN ALSO BE SELECTED BY THE ENGINEER. THE GIRDER CAN BE DESIGNED WITH OR WITHOUT TRANSVERSE OR LONGITUDINAL STIFFENERS AS SELECTED BY THE DESIGNER. THE THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE APPROACH HAS BEEN REPORTED ELSE-WHERE. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT IS TO PROVIDE A USER'S GUIDE AND A MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR THE PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, GIRDER: AUTOMATED DESIGN I (GAD I) IS WRITTEN IN FORTRAN IV. IT HAS BEEN TESTED ON THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF COMPUTERS: UNIVAC 1107, UNIVAC 1108, IBM 360 MOD 50, CDC 3600 AND CDC 6600. /AUTHOR/
