REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGES - WORKING STRESS VERSUS ULTIMATE STRENGTH
THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO: (1) SERVE AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE USE OF THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS 'STRENGTH AND SERVICEABILITY CRITERIA-REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE MEMBERS-ULTIMATE DESIGN,' AND (2) SHOW BRIEFLY HOW THE SERVICEABILITY OF A STRUCTURE MAY BE CONTROLLED BY THE USE OF THESE CRITERIA. TWO STRUCTURES WERE DESIGNED USING THESE CRITERIA AND COMPARED WITH TWO DESIGNS USING THE CONVENTIONL WORKING STRESS METHODS. THE STRUCTURES ARE A 4-SPAN CONTINUOUS BOX GIRDER AND A 4-SPAN CONTINUOUS T-GIRDER, BOTH WITH MONOLITHIC 2-COLUM BENTS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON SHOWING THE EFFECT OF EACH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE CRITERIA ON THE FINAL STRUCTURE WITH A COMPARISON OF THE ELEMENTS AND COST OF THE STRUCTURE WHEN DESIGNED USING THESE CRITERIA VERSUS THE MORE CONVENTIONAL WORKING STRESS METHODS. /RRL/A/
