CAN HIGH-STRENGTH REINFORCEMENT BE USED IN HIGHWAY BRIDGES?
THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT ON BEAMS REINFORCED WITH HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL ARE SUMMARIZED. IT IS SHOWN THAT: (1) CRACK SPACINGS AND CRACK WIDTHS MAY BE PREDICTED BY CALCULATIONS, (2) AT MODERATE CRACK WIDTHS CORROSION OF REINFORCEMENT IS NOT A PROBLEM, AND THAT (3) FATIGUE STRENGTHS MAY BE PREDICTED FOR ALL GRADES OF STEEL AS A FUNCTION OF THE STRESS RANGE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT HIGH-STRENGTH REINFORCEMENT MAY BE USED IN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION WITH ADVANTAGE. /RRL/A/
