DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF CONCRETE HIGHWAY BRIDGES

A METHOD FOR THE DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE HIGHWAY BRIDGES SUBJECTED TO MOVING VEHICLES IS PRESENTED. THE SPECIFIC FEATURE DISTINGUISHING THIS METHOD FROM OTHERS IS THAT THE DYNAMIC EFFECTS ARE CONSIDERED AS THE SUM OF THE EFFECT OF THE INTERACTING FORCES BETWEEN THE VEHICLES AND THE BRIDGE AND THE EFFECT OF THE INERTIA FORCE OF THE BRIDGE ITSELF. CONCRETE BRIDGES USUALLY HAVE COMPARATIVELY LARGE MASS, HENCE LARGE INERTIA FORCE. THE PRESENT METHOD, THEREFORE, IS VERY DESIRABLE. EQUATIONS OF MOTION ARE GIVEN IN A GENERAL FORM. THEY ARE APPLICABLE TO CONTINUOUS BRIDGES, CANTILEVER BRIDGES AND SIMPLE-SPAN BRIDGES. THE SPECIFIC EQUATIONS FOR SIMPLE-SPAN BRIDGES ARE PRESENTED. A NUMERICAL PROCEDURE TO SOLVE THESE EQUATIONS ON DIGITAL COMPUTERS IS OUTLINED. A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR SIMPLE-SPAN BRIDGES IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED AND AN EXAMPLE IS ILLUSTRATED. /RRL/A/
