BOND BETWEEN CONCRETE AND STEEL

REPORTS ARE GIVEN OF RESULTS FROM A SERIES OF INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT OF THE DEBATABLE ASPECTS OF BOND BETWEEN CONCRETE AND STEEL. TESTS WERE MADE ON PULL-OUT SPECIMENS, BEAM-TYPE SPECIMENS, AND BEAMS. THE MAJOR VARIABLES WERE LENGTH OF BAR EMBEDMENT, STRENGTH OF CONCRETE, ORIENTATION AT CASTING FOR DIFFERENT CEMENTS, AND TYPE OF BAR (PLAIN OR DEFORMED). BARS WERE OF RAIL STEEL, HOT-ROLLED BILLET STEEL OF STRUCTURAL GRADE, AND HIGH-STRENGTH ALLOY STEEL. IN THREE SERIES SLIP OF BAR WAS MEASURED AT THE LOADED AS WELL AS THE UNLOADED END OF EACH PULL-OUT SPECIMEN. STRAINS IN THE CONCRETE WERE OBSERVED AT THE SURFACES OF BOTH PULL-OUT SPECIMENS. STRAINS IN THE CONCRETE WERE OBSERVED AT THE SURFACES OF BOTH PULL-OUT SPECIMENS AND BEAMS. foundECONNAISSANCE TESTS INCLUDED INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EFFECT OF RUST (ON PLAIN BARS), SMOOTHNESS OF BAR SURFACE (USING DRAWN WIRE), GREASE ON BAR (PLAIN AND DEFORMED), SHORT-TIME AND SUSTAINED LOADING THROUGH SPRINGS, DIAMETER OF BAR, TYPE OF CURING, CONDITION AT TEST (WET OR DRY), AGE AT TEST (14 AND 28 DAYS), AND AUTOGENOUS HEALING IN BOND. THE STRAIN DATA SHOW THAT THE BOND RESPONSE TO LOAD IS PROGRESSIVE ALONG THE BAR AND THAT THE BASIC ACTION IS THE SAME FOR LONG AND SHORT EMBEDMENTS AND FOR BEAMS AND PULL-OUT SPECIMENS. AT A GIVEN POINT THE ADHESIVE RESISTANCE DEVELOPS FIRST; FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE REMAINS AFTER THE ADHESIVE BOND FAILS. FOR LONG PLAIN-BAR EMBEDMENTS FRICTIONAL BOND CONTRIBUTES MATERIALLY TO TOTAL BOND RESISTANCE IN THE REGION BETWEEN THE POINT OF MAXIMUM STRESS (IN THE STEEL AT THE LOADED END OF A PULL-OUT SPECIMEN) AND THE REGION OF MAXIMUM (ADHESIVE) BOND. FOR LONG EMBEDMENTS OF DEFORMED BARS LUG ACTION NEAR THE POINT OF MAXIMUM STRESS MAY BECOME PARTIALLY EFFECTIVE BEFORE THE ADHESIVE BOND HAS BEEN BROKEN FARTHER ON. MARGINS OF SAFETY IN COMPRESSION, TENSION, DIAGONAL TENSION, AND BOND ARE COMPARED ON THE BASIS OF THE TEST RESULTS SECURED FROM BEAM- TYPE SPECIMENS. /AUTHOR/
