STUDY OF BATTER PILES SUBJECTED TO LATERAL LOADS

THE BEHAVIOR OF BATTER PILES UNDER LATERAL LOADS IS STUDIED BY TESTS ON MODEL ALUMINUM PILES. LOADS ARE APPLIED HORIZONTALLY IN ALL CASES AT THE GROUND LEVEL. THE HORIZONTAL DISPLACEMENT IS MEASURED AT GROUND LEVEL BY MEANS OF A MECHANICAL DIAL GAUGE. THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIOR OF BATTER PILES AND PILE BENTS IS INDICATED:(1) THE RESISTANCE TO LATERAL LOADS OF BATTERS OPPOSITE TO THE DIRECTION OF LATERAL LOADS BATTERED PILE IS LESS THAN THAT OF A VERTICAL PILE, (2) THE RESISTANCE TO LATERAL LOADS OF BATTERS IN THE DIRECTION OF LATERAL LOADS-BATTERED PILE IS GREATER THAN THAT OF A VERTICAL PILE, (3) THE GROUP OF PILES HAVING BOTH VERTICAL AND BATTERED PILES ARE MORE RESISTANT TO LATERAL LOADS EITHER IN THE DIRECTION OF BATTER OR AGAINST THE BATTER THAN THOSE CONTAINING VERTICAL PILES ONLY, AND (4) FOR ANY GROUP OF VERTICAL AND BATTERED, THE RESISTANCE TO LATERAL LOADS IN THE DIRECTION OF THE BATTER IS MORE THAN THAT TO LOADS AGAINST THE BATTER.
