AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF EIGHT DIFFERENT TYPES OF HIGHWAY BRIDGE STRUCTURES. STUDY OF EFFECT OF NEW VEHICLE WEIGHT LAW ON STRUCTURES

THE EFFECTS OF HEAVY TRUCK LOADS ON BRIDGE STRUCTURES ARE STUDIED BY AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE STRESSES AND DEFLECTIONS DUE TO HEAVY TRUCKS FOR VARIOUS BRIDGE STRUCTURES. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE ANALYTICAL METHODS USED IN THE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS. THE LIVE LOAD STRESSES, EVALUATED UNDER THE CONSIDERATION OF AASHO CODE AND THEORY, UTILIZED A SINGLE BPR TEST TRUCK AS A LOADING. THE COMBINED STRESSES, LISTED BY THEORY AND CODE IN A TABLE, ARE LOW COMPARED TO THE ALLOWABLE MATERIAL PROPERTIES. EXAMINATION OF THOSE BRIDGES DETAILED IN THIS REPORT, SUBJECT TO THE BPR TEST TRUCK AND ACCORDING TO THEORY, INDICATES THERE IS AN ADEQUATE MARGIN OF SAFETY OF OVERSTRESSING FOR THESE STRUCTURES. THE FINAL ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF THE EFFECTS OF EXCESS AXLE LOADS WILL BE ANSWERED COMPLETELY UPON COMPLETION OF THE BRIDGE TESTING AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS.
