HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTING
THE SPECIFICATIONS, CHANGES AND NEW APPLICATIONS OF HIGH- STRENGTH BOLTING FOR STEEL STRUCTURES ARE DISCUSSED. WHEN THE BOLTING METHOD IS COMPARED WITH RIVETING, IT IS FOUND TO BE STRONGER, MORE ECONOMICAL, HAVE IMPROVED BEHAVIOR BECAUSE OF FRICTION GRIPPING, AND BE PERMANENT FASTENING WITHOUT LOCK WASHERS. THE INSTALLATION OF THE BOLTS IS FOUND TO BE FASTER, LESS NOISY, REQUIRE LESS EQUIPMENT AND LESS TRAINING OF THE CREW, REDUCE THE FIRE RISK, AND REQUIRE LESS INSPECTION BECAUSE OF GREATER CONSISTENCY. SPECIFICATIONS ARE GIVEN AS TO YIELD STRENGTH, TENSILE STRENGTH, SLOPE OF SURFACE, WORKING STRESSES AND SHEAR OF HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTING. THE INSTALLATION METHOD FOR BOLTS IS GIVEN. FUTURE APPLICATION OF GALVANIZED BOLTS AND STRUCTURES AND THE USE OF HIGH-STRENGTH STEELS IN LARGE BOLTED STRUCTURES ARE MENTIONED.
