IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF SIGN SUPPORTS: PROGRESS REPORT

IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF CERTAIN LARGE SIGN SUPPORTS WAS DESCRIBED. SUPPORTS SELECTED WERE PREDICATED UPON CURRENT DESIGN PROCEDURES AND DEVELOPMENT OF INTERIM DESIGNS TO MINIMIZE HAZARDS. A FULL-SCALE CRASH TEST FACILITY WAS DEVELOPED, AND HIGH-SPEED MOTION PICTURE CAMERAS WERE USED TO RECORD SIGN SUPPORT BEHAVIOR ON IMPACT WHEN STRUCK BY A STANDARD SIZE CAR. QUALITATIVE DATA ON SUPPORT BEHAVIOR WERE SECURED AND NEW DEVICES WERE INTRODUCED, WHICH RESULTED IN IMPROVED IMPACT CHARACTERISTICS. REVISED SUPPORT DESIGNS WERE DEVELOPED AND INCLUDED IN CURRENT CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS IN TEXAS. POST BEHAVIOR UNDER IMPACT ALSO WAS STUDIED. AN IDEALIZED MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS PLANNED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL QUALITATIVE DATA. SUPPORTING TESTS ARE BEING CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE MATERIALS FOR USE IN NEW DEVICES DESCRIBED. THE EFFECTS OF WIND ON SIGNS ARE BEING CONSIDERED
