NEW APPROACHES TO THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES AGAINST WIND ACTION

THE NEED FOR NEW APPROACHES TO THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES HAS BEEN EMPHASIZED BY TWO FACTS: (1) THAT CUSTOMARY STATIC WIND LOADS ARE UNREALISTIC, (2) NEW ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENTS ARE LEADING TO A NEW GENERATION OF STRUCTURES WHICH RESPOND TO WIND IN A MANNER DIFFERENT FROM THEIR PREDECESSORS. TODAYS BUILDINGS HAVE DIFFERENT AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS AND LOWER DENSITIES, STRUCTURAL MATERIALS HAVE CHANGED IN STRENGTH AND STIFFNESS, THE DAMPING OF STRUCTURES HAS DECREASED, AND THROUGH NEW METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND THE COMPUTER, OPPORTUNITIES NOW EXIST FOR STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION. EACH OF THESE FACTORS RADICALLY CHANGE A STRUCTURE'S RESPONSE TO WIND. TWO APPROACHES TO THE DYNAMIC FACTOR OF WIND ARE SUGGESTED: (1) A "GUST FACTOR" APPROACH, AND (2) AN APPROACH USING CORRECTLY SIMULATED WIND TUNNEL TESTING. /CGRA/
