ASSESSMENT OF THE PROBABILISTIC APPROACH TO SHIP LONGITUDINAL STRENGTH
The advent of ship configurations departing drastically from conventional ship types has resulted in problems with respect to classification rules and design methods. Some major structural failures experienced by ships of the more radical configurations have made the Classification Societies take an interest in design methods based upon statistics and probability as a means of rationally selecting design criteria. This paper provides the Naval Architect with a summary of such a design method emphasizing the underlying assumptions and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the method is extended to illustrate how it can be applied to define the required ship section modulus for any specific level of safety.
