LABORATORY TESTS ON A FULL-SCALE PONY TRUSS BRIDGE. PART II TESTS WITH A REINFORCED CONCRETE DECK

LABORATORY TESTS ARE DESCRIBED ON A 49 FOOT SPAN PONY TRUSS BRIDGE HAVING A DECK CONSISTING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB SUPPORTED ON STEEL STRINGERS. THE MAJORITY OF THE TESTS WERE CONCERNED WITH MEASUREMENTS OF STRAINS IN STEEL AND CONCRETE RESULTING FROM CONCENTRATED LOADS APPLIED ABOVE A STRINGER. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF COMPOSITE ACTION BY COMPARING RESULTS: /1/ WHEN THE SLAB WAS SUPPORTED BY THE STRINGER /BUT NOT EMBEDDED IN IT/, /2/ WHEN SLIP WAS FACILITATED BY PAPER BETWEEN SLAB AND STRINGER, AND /3/ WHEN SHEAR CONNECTORS WERE ADDED AFTER THE SLAB HAD BEEN CAST. THE LAST CONDITION REPRESENTED AN ATTEMPT TO STRENGTHEN AN EXISTING DECK BY THE ADDITION OF SHEAR CONNECTORS. THE TESTS SHOWED THAT MAXIMUM STRAIN IN STRINGERS MAY BE ESTIMATED SAFELY BY HARMONIC ANALYSIS ASSUMING A CERTAIN MINIMUM DEGREE OF COMPOSITE ACTION. TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF THE CONCRETE SLAB IS TO BE EXPECTED UNDER LIVE LOADS. MAXIMUM CONCRETE STRAINS ARE NOT OF SUFFICIENT MAGNITUDE TO LIMIT THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF DECKS. SHEAR CONNECTORS INSTALLED IN A CRACKED SLAB DO NOT PROVIDE A RIGID CONNECTION BETWEEN STRINGERS AND SLAB BUT DO SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASE THE STIFFNESS OF THE DECK. ON THE BASIS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, THE DECK WAS JUDGED TO HAVE AN AASHO INVENTORY RATING OF H 14.7 /BASED ON ASSUMED YIELD OF 30 KSI/ AND AN OPERATING RATING OF H 34.0. THE CORRESPONDING OJHRP RATING WAS H 32.6. TESTS INDICATED THAT ANY OF THESE LOADS COULD SAFELY BE SUPPORTED BY THE SLAB.
