EXPERIMENTAL STRAIN ANALYSIS OF CONTINUOUS SKEW SLAB BRIDGE DECKS

THE INVESTIGATION CONSISTED OF STRAIN GAGING A CONTINUOUS SKEW BRIDGE DECK SLAB. WELDABLE STRAIN GAGES WERE WELDED ON REINFORCING BARS WHILE EMBEDMENT GAGES WERE USED FOR MEASURING CONCRETE STRAINS. STRAIN MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN PRIOR AND AFTER FORMWORK STRIPPING, FOR THREE SERIES OF EIGHT LIVE LOADING COMBINATIONS EACH CONSISTING OF TWO TRUCKS, AND FOR TEMPERATURE STRESSES. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE SLABS EXPERIENCE HIGH TEMPERATURE STRAINS DUE TO SUPPORT CONSTRAINTS AND TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS. ALSO THE SLAB SHOWED BEAM BEHAVIOR RATHER THAN PLATE BEHAVIOR WITH AN EFFECTIVE WIDTH LARGER THAN RECOMMENDED BY AASHO SPECIFICATIONS.
