STABILITY OF CURVED BOX GIRDERS

THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF STATIC TESTS ON HORIZONTALLY CURVED STEEL BOX GIRDERS ARE PRESENTED. A TOTAL OF 13 TESTS ON TWO CURVED BOX GIRDERS WAS CONDUCTED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE BEHAVIOR OF THESE SPECIMENS IN THE ELASTIC RANGE. ONE BOX WITH A RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION AND ONE WITH A TRAPEZOIDAL CROSS SECTION (INCLINED WEBS) WERE TESTED. THE OVERALL LOAD-DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPECIMENS, THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE FLANGES AND WEBS, THE INFLUENCE OF INTERIOR INTERMEDIATE DIAPHRAGMS OR CROSS- FRAMES ON THE BEHAVIOR OF THE CROSS SECTION, AND THE BEHAVIOR OF LONGITUDINAL FLANGE STIFFENERS WERE INVESTIGATED. THE TEST RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED, AND CURRENT DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR BOX GIRDER BRIDGES ARE EVALUATED USING THESE RESULTS. /AUTHOR/
