ON THE COMPUTATION OF THERMAL STRESS DUE TO HEAT OF HYDRATION

A METHOD OF COMPUTING THERMAL STRESS DUE TO HEAT OF HYDRATION IN A CONCRETE IS PRESENTED. NEW CONCRETE IN CONTACT WITH OLD CONCRETE WILL BE AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE RISE DUE TO HEAT GENERATED BY HYDRATION OF CEMENT. A RESTRAINT OF OLD CONCRETE AT A CONSTRUCTION JOINT WILL PREVENT A FREE THERMAL DEFORMATION OF THE NEW CONCRETE, AND CAUSE THERMAL STRESSES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE CONSTRUCTON JOINT AND THERMAL CRACKS IN THE NEW CONCRETE. THIS STUDY DEALS WITH THERMAL STRESSES OF THIS NATURE. FACTORS, SUCH AS INCREASE IN MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME AND RELAXATION OF STRESS DUE TO PLASTICITY OF THE NEW CONCRETE ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. A COMPUTER CALCULATION OF THERMAL STRESS IS PERFORMED BY SOLVING NUMERICALLY AIRY'S STRESS FUNCTION. AN EXAMPLE OF VARIATIONS IN THERMAL STRESS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME USING TEMPERATURE RECORDED AT AN ACTUAL JOB SITE IS GIVEN.
