TEMPERATURE CONTROL OF MASS CONCRETE IN JAPAN
A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF WORK ON TEMPERATURE CONTROL OF MASS CONCRETE IN JAPAN, AIMED AT ACCURATELY ESTIMATING TEMPERATURE CRACKING. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF TEMPERATURE STRESSES IN MASS CONCRETE, OF METHODS OF TEMPERATURE CONTROL, OF THE THERMAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE, AND OF THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE STRESS IN CONCRETE CAUSED BY FOUNDATION RESTRAINT. FURTHER RESEARCH ON THE ESTIMATION OF TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION, ON METHODS OF CALCULATING RESTRAINT STRESSES, AND ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF HARDENING IS SUGGESTED. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 49TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD, HELD IN WASHINGTON, D C, USA, JANUARY 12-16, 1970.
