YIELD LINE ANALYSIS OF PUNCHING FAILURES IN SLABS
YIELD LINE THEORY EQUATIONS ARE DERIVED FOR VARIOUS CASES OF CONCENTRATED LOADS OR COLUMNS ACTING ON SLABS. THESE EQUATIONS ARE USED IN THE ANALYSIS OF 234 PUNCHING FAILURE SPECIMENS PRESENTED IN THE LITERATURE. THE ARITHMETIC MEAN OF P.YIELD LINE/P.TEST WAS 1.03, WITH A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 0.29.A SEMI-EMPIRICAL FORMULA, BASED ON THE TEST RESULTS, IS PRESENTED WHICH PROVIDES A DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN YIELD LINE BENDING FAILURES AND SHEAR FAILURES AND PERMITS AN ACCURATE PREDICTION AS TO WHETHER THE FAILURE IN ANY GIVEN CASE WILL BE DUE PRIMARILY TO BENDING OR TO SHEAR. APPLICATION TO STANDARD DESIGNS REVEALS THAT CAPITALS AND SHEAR REINFORCEMENT CAN PROBABLY BE ELIMINATED IN MANY FLAT SLAB AND FLAT PLATE STRUCTURES. /AUTHOR/
