ON THE EFFECT OF THERMAL STRESSES CAUSED BY SUNLIGHT IN MULTI-SPANNED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE FRAME BRIDGE
THERMAL STRESSES CAUSED BY SEASONAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES HAVE BEEN WIDELY STUDIED & METHODS OF CALCULATION HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED AS DESIGN CRITERIA. STUDIES OF THERMAL STRESS DUE TO DAILY TEMPERATURE CHANGE OR UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPERATURE, HOWEVER, ARE VERY FEW. TO KNOW THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE CHANGES CAUSED BY DIRECT SUNLIGHT, FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF TEMPERATURE AND DEFLECTION ON AN ACTUAL PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE WERE CARRIED OUT. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE EFFECT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION IN STRUCTURAL DESIGN. A PRACTICAL METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF THERMAL STRESS DUE TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT IS PROPOSED.
