PRESTRESSED COMPOSITE HYBRID BEAMS
IN THE "PREFLEX" AND OTHER SYSTEMS AN INTERNAL BENDING STRESS IS OBTAINED BY BENDING MILLED GIRDERS OF FE-52 STEEL, WITH A SYMMETRICAL SECTION ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF BENDING, TO FORM A COMPOSITE CONCRETE SLAB. HOWEVER, USE OF FE-52 STEEL ENTAILS A REDUCED STRESS LIMIT DURING THE PRELIMINARY FLEXURE OF THE GIRDERS. ACCORDINGLY, WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN TO TEST THE APPLICABILITY OF A COMPOSITE, DISSYMMETRIC, WELDED HYBRID BEAM WITH A HIGH YIELD STRENGTH FLANGE COMPONENT, SUCH AS T-1 STEEL. THE FE-52/T-1 YIELD STRENGTH RATIO IS ABOUT 0.5. THE FINDINGS OF PREVIOUS RESEARCH ARE COMBINED WITH A MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS TO SHOW THAT USE OF STEELS LIKE T-1 MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE HIGHER PRECOMPRESSION STRENGTH. T-1 STEEL CAN BE USED AT ITS MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE TENSILE STRUCTURAL STRESS. WELDING COSTS CAN BE AT LEAST PARTIALLY OFFSET BY THE POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING A COUNTERFLEXURE WITHOUT PARTICULAR OPERATIONS.
