DIFFERENTIAL SKRINKAGE EFFECTS IN COMPOSITE STRUCTURES
EXISTING METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENTIAL SHRINKAGE IN COMPOSITE SECTIONS MAKE ASSUMPTIONS THAT ARE INCONSISTENT WITH ACTUAL BEHAVIOR. SPECIFICALLY, (1) THE EFFECTS OF SHRINKAGE AND CREEP IN PRECAST MEMBERS ARE DISREGARDED, (2) ARBITRARY ASSUMPTIONS ARE MADE CONCERNING THE LINES OF ACTION OF THE INTERCONNECTING FORCES IN THE TWO CONCRETE SECTIONS, AND (3) IT IS ASSUMED THAT OWING TO THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENTIAL SHRINKAGE THE CROSS SECTION REMAINS PLANE IN THE COMPOSITE STRUCTURE, WHICH LEADS TO ARBITRARY METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND TO ERRONEOUS RESULTS. A METHOD IS PRESENTED THAT PRODUCES A MORE EXACT ANALYSIS. IT SHOWS, INTER ALIA, THAT THE RESULTANT STRESSES IN THE COMPOSITE CROSS SECTION ARE SMALLER THAN THOSE CALCULATED BY EXISTING METHODS. /AUTHOR/
