SEISMIC DESIGN OF EARTH STRUCTURES AND FOUNDATION WORKS

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR RETAINING WALLS AND CAISSON FOUNDATIONS ARE OUTLINED. THE THEORY OF N. MONONOBE IS EMPLOYED TO DEVELOP CRITERIA FOR RETAINING WALLS. A TABLE IS PRESENTED, DERIVED FROM THIS THEORY, IN WHICH COEFFICIENTS CHANGE WITH ANGLES OF INTERNAL FRICTION RANGING FROM 10 DEG TO 40 DEG. THE PREVISION THAT THE SEISMIC FORCE NEED NOT BE CONSIDERED IN THE DESIGN OR ORDINARY RETAINING WALLS HAS BEEN STIPULATED EMPIRICALLY ON THE BASIS OF DATA FROM THE HIGASHI MATSUYAMA, MATSUSHIRO, NIIGATA, AND OTHER EARTHQUAKES. THE DISCUSSION OF CAISSON FOUNDATIONS IS DRAWN FROM A RECENT BOOK---"DESIGN OF CAISSON FOUNDATIONS - A GUIDE FOR DESIGNING THE SUBSTRUCTURE OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES"--- AND CENTERS ON DEPARTURES FROM ACCEPTED PROCEDURES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: SPRING OF FORMATIONS SURROUNDING THE CAISSON; DEFORMATION COEFFICIENT OF THE LAYER; CALCULATION OF REACTION AND DEFORMATION OF THE CAISSON FOUNDATION SUBJECTED TO VERTICAL LOAD, HORIZONTAL LOAD, AND BENDING MOMENT; AND STABILITY CONDITON OF THE CAISSON FOUNDATION.
