TRENDS ON A REVISION OF THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

AT THE FIRST JOINT MEETING IN TOKYO IN 1969 CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO A PROPOSED REVISION TO THE CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT DESIGN. THE PRESENT ARTICLE IS A CONTINUATION OF THE REPORT. A HORIZONTAL GRAVITY ACCELERATION COEFFICIENT OF 0.2 IS PROPOSED FOR HIGHWAY BRIDGES CONSTRUCTED ON NORMAL GROUND CONDITIONS WHICH IN JAPAN WOULD BE A DELUVIAL STRATUM. THE COEFFICIENT IS MODIFIED BY THREE FACTORS: SEISMIC INTENSITIES ASSOCIATED WITH VARIOUS ZONES, GROUND CONDITIONS, AND THE IMPORTANCE ATTACHED TO THE BRIDGE BY THE GOVERNMENT. A SAFETY FACTOR IS APPLIED OVER AND ABOVE THESE FACTORS.
