CONTROL OF TUNNELING MACHINE BY "TUNNELASER" SYSTEM
A LASER CONTROL OF TUNNELLING MACHINE ALIGNMENT WAS DEVELOPED IN THE BAY AREA TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM (BART). ON 18,000 FEET ON TUNNEL FOR THE BART RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM IN THE SAN FRANCISCO AND OAKLAND AREAS, A LASER LIGHT SOURCE WAS USED IN MAINTAINING TUNNELLING-MACHINE ALIGNMENT. TO MAINTAIN ALIGNMENT ON CURVES, THE LIGHT BEAM IS ALIGNED WITH CURVES PLOTTED ON TRANSPARENT PLASTIC SHEETS MOUNTED AT THE CONSOLE OF THE TUNNELLING MACHINE OPERATOR. OPERATION, POWER, PROBLEMS AND COSTS OF THE SYSTEM ARE REVIEWED.
