POLYESTER FIBER REINFORCEMENT OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVEMENT
RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT UNDER SPONSORSHIP OF THE U.S. BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS ON STRUCTOFORS, WHICH IS A POLYESTER FIBER REINFORCEMENT-FABRIC. THE FABRIC WAS PLACED ON AN OLD PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT WITH A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF CRACKING. A TEST SECTION WAS CONSTRUCTED USING THE STRUCTOFORS COVERED BY 2 INCHES OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, AND A CONTROL SECTION WHICH CONTAINS NO FABRIC WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. ANOTHER RESEARCH PROJECT IS BEING CONDUCTED IN A NEARBY STATE TESTING THE FABRIC OVER JOINTS ONLY. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF THE FABRIC, THIS LATTER USE MAY BE THE MOST PRACTICAL USE OF THE FABRIC DEPENDING ON RESULTS OF BOTH RESEARCH PROJECTS.
