PLANNING OF PROJECTS - EARTHWORKS
THE SUBJECTS TO BE DISCUSSED DURING THE SESSION ON PROJECT PLANNING OF EARTHWORKS WERE DIVIDED INTO SIX SECTIONS: (1) PRELIMINARY SURVEYS FOR PROJECT STUDY, (2) GEOMETRIC STUDIES AND COMPUTER PROCESSES, (3) SOIL SAMPLING, (4) EARTHWORK IN CONTACT WITH THE PAVEMENT, (5) CONSTRUCTION OF EARTHWORKS, AND (6) SPECIAL CASES. TWENTY-TWO COUNTRIES CONTRIBUTED REPORTS PERTINENT TO SOME OR ALL OF THE SECTIONS AND A COMPREHENSIVE SUMMARY WAS PRESENTED OF THE VARIOUS REPORTS BY M. ANDRE THIEBAULT OF FRANCE. SPEAKERS FOR THIS SESSION INCLUDED: (1) M. MAILLANT OF FRANCE, WHO DISCUSSED USE OF COMPUTERS AND AUTOMATIC PLOTTERS BY HIGHWAY ENGINEERS; (2) DR. FUKUOKA OF JAPAN, WHO SPOKE ON SOIL CLASSIFICATION METHODS AND LANDSLIDES; (3) MR. WILSON OF GREAT BRITAIN, WHO DESCRIBED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A INTEGRATED SERIES OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR ROAD DESIGN; (4) MR. NIKOLAEN OF THE USSR, WHO DISCUSSED THE GREAT DIVERSITY OF SOIL AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS HIS COUNTRY'S HIGHWAY ENGINEERS MUST DEAL WITH; (5) M. SACCASYN OF BELGIUM WHO POINTED OUT MEANS OF MINIMIZING CLIMATIC HAZARDS; (6) MR. MARIN MARINESCO OF ROMANIA, WHO DISCUSSED PROBLEMS OF SOIL MECHANICS, PLACING EMPHASIS ON SLOPE STABILITY AND RHEOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN EARTHWORKS; (7) MR. POCTA OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA, WHO SPOKE ON THE USAGE OF A LARGE VARIETY OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS RELATED TO ROAD PROJECTS; (8) DR. MILLARD OF GREAT BRITAIN, WHOSE TOPIC WAS SOIL COMPACTION; (9) MR. SIEDEK OF GERMANY, WHO DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL MECHANICS ON SELECTION OF CONSTRUCTION METHODS; (10) M. BEER OF BELGIUM, WHO TALKED ON BOTH BAD WEATHER EFFECTS DURING CONSTRUCTION AND ON SAND DRAIN CONSTRUCTION; (11) MR. KURDI OF SAUDI ARABIA, WHO DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF MOISTURE CONTENT IN EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION AND IN COMPACTION OF SOILS; AND (12) MR. OWEN OF GREAT BRITAIN WHO SPOKE ON THE PROBLEMS OF TRANSITION FROM TRADITIONAL TO COMPUTER DESIGN METHODS. THE GENERAL REPORTER, M. THIEBAULT CONCLUDED THE SESSION WITH SUMMARIZING COMMENTS.
