AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF CROSS-BENDING OF CURVED COMPRESSION FLANGES IN FISH-BELLY HAUNCHED PLATE GIRDERS
A FIELD METHOD FOR DETERMINING MAGNITUDE OF CROSS-BENDING STRESSES ON BRIDGES WITH AN OLDER RELATIVELY SHORT RADIUS CIRCULAR ARC HAUNCH AND A NEWER LONGER RADIUS OF CURVATURE PARABOLIC HAUNCH IS REPORTED. A FIELD STUDY, AND A LABORATORY STUDY OF MODELS OF THE HAUNCHED REGIONS, WERE CONDUCTED. THE ST. PATRICK STREET OVERPASS OF I-90 AND THE BRIDGE OVER NORTH WILLOW CREEK ON S.D.-79 WERE SELECTED. BOTH ARE COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION AND HAVE 48-INCH DEEP WEB PLATES IN THE HAUNCHED REGION, AND WERE DESIGNED FOR H20-S16 LOADING ACCORDING TO AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY OFFICIALS SPECIFICATIONS. THE TEST TRUCK WAS PLACED AT THE CRITICAL POSITION AND THEN MOVED TO POSITIONS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE THEORETICAL CRITICAL POINT. THE PROCEDURE WAS REPEATED WITH THE VEHICLE IN THE ADJACENT SPAN AND ADJACENT LANE. ONLY STATIC LOADING WAS CONSIDERED. IN THE LABORATORY, SIX PARTIALLY FULL SCALE GIRDER MODELS WERE TESTED TO FAILURE; THREE WERE OF THE OLDER DESIGN AND THREE WERE OF THE NEWER HAUNCH DESIGN. THE JACKING FORCE WAS SUPPLIED BY A 200-TON CAPACITY 8 INCH STROKE HYDRAULIC JACK. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MODELS WERE IDENTICAL TO THOSE OF THE INTERIOR GIRDERS OF THE FIELD TESTED BRIDGES EXCEPT FOR LENGTH. THE LABORATORY MODELS WERE FABRICATED FROM ASTM-A36 STEEL CONFORMING WITH THE MATERIAL USED IN THE FIELD, AND THE INSTRUMENTS WERE THE SAME AS THOSE USED IN THE FIELD. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT CROSSBENDING OF CURVED COMPRESSION FLANGES OF HAUNCHED PLATE GIRDERS EXISTED UNDER FIELD AND LABORATORY CONDITIONS. LOCALIZED YIELDING BEGINS AT A LOWER LOAD IN THE SHORTER RADIUS CIRCULAR ARC HAUNCH THAN IN THE LONGER RADIUS PARABOLIC HAUNCH. THE HAUNCH TYPE DID NOT INFLUENCE THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE GIRDER MODELS. /FHWA/
