EXPERIENCES WITH TEST ROADS HAVING FOAMED PLASTIC INSULATING COURSES /IN GERMAN/
THE RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS (DYNAMIC LOADING, HEAT MEASUREMENT ETC.) ON SPECIAL TEST ROADS INCORPORATING STYROPOR HARD FOAM SLABS, VARYING IN THICKNESS AND DENSITY, AND STYROPOR LIGHWEIGHT CONCRETES CONFIRM THE SUITABILITY OF THESE MATERIALS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE LAYING OF THE MATERIAL ON A SAND FORMATION, COVERING WITH A LAYER OF GRAVELLY SAND, COMPACTION WITH VIBRATING ROLLERS AND DIRECT APPLICATION OF THE BITUMINOUS ROADBASE. ADVANTAGES OF THE METHOD INCLUDE THE POSSIBLE REDUCTION IN THICKNESS OF THE ROAD STRUCTURE DUE TO THE ELIMINATION OF THE FROST BLANKET, AND THE HEAT INSULATION PROVIDED IN WINTER; A DISADVANTAGE IS THAT A SLOW TRANSFER OF HEAT IN HOT WEATHER CAN LEAD TO SOFTENING OF THE BITUMINOUS MATERIALS. /FG/RRL/
