ALUMINUM ORTHOTROPIC BRIDGE DECK
225,000 LBS OF ALCOA ALUMINUM HAVE BEEN FABRICATED INTO ROADWAY DECK AND SIDEWALK PANELS FOR THE SMITHFIELD STREET BRIDGE IN PITTSBURGH, PA. ORTHOTROPIC DESIGN, WHICH PERMITS EXTENSIVE TRANSVERSE DISTRIBUTION OF WHEEL LOADS FOR MAXIMUM DESIGN EFFICIENCY, HAS BEEN EMPLOYED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALUMINUM BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION. TOTAL WEIGHT OF DECK, INCLUDING SURFACING, IS ONLY 15 PSF. THIS IS PROBABLY THE LIGHTEST CLOSED DECK THAT HAS EVER BEEN DESIGNED FOR USE BY 20-TON TRUCKS ON 9-FT CONTINUOUS SPANS. COMPLETELY SHOP FABRICATED 300-SQ. FT PANELS WEIGHING 4,500 LBS WERE INSTALLED BY A MOBILE CRANE. A SKID-RESISTANT, 3/8-IN. THICK, POLYESTER RESIN-SILICA SAND SURFACE COATING WAS SHOP APPLIED, SO THE DECK WAS IMMEDIATELY READY FOR TRAFFIC. CORROSION-RESISTANT ALUMINUM ALLOYS WILL NOT REQUIRE MAINTENANCE TO PRESERVE THEIR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. /AUTHOR/
