CPM STILL HAS TO BATTLE FOR ACCEPTANCE
AT A RECENT FORUM ON THE CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM) OF PROJECT SCHEDULE CONTROL, THE 300 DELEGATES GAVE AMPLE EVIDENCE THAT CPM HAS A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE GAINING UNIVERSAL ACCEPTANCE, DESPITE 10 YEARS OF FIELD DEVELOPMENT AND GREAT SUCCESS IN MANY PROJECTS INCLUDING EXPO '67. ONLY 15% OF CANADA'S $1 MILLION/YEAR CONTRACTORS USE THE METHOD FOR PLANNING AND SCHEDULING JOBS. THE OPINION OF THOSE WHO USE IT IS THAT ALONE IT HAS LIMITED BENEFITS BUT IS EXTREMELY USEFUL AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE FULL PROJECT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. THE COST OF A CPM SCHEDULE FOR A $5-$10 MILLION JOB IS 1/3% TO 1/5%. THE PROJECT MANAGER SHOULD ANALYZE HIS PROJECTS BUT BE CAREFUL HE SOLVES MORE PROBLEMS THAN HE CREATES.
