PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION OF CONCRETE AGGREGATE TO DETERMINE POTENTIAL ALKALI REACTIVITY, WITH DISCUSSION
PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION IS THE VISUAL AND ANALYTIC INVESTIGATIONS OF BOTH AGGREGATE LITHOLOGY AND AGGREGATE PARTICLE SIZE. THE MOST IMPORTANT ALKALI-REACTIVE ROCKS ARE LISTED AND DESCRIBED. INFLUENTIAL FACTORS OTHER THAN LITHOLOGIC COMPOSITION ARE AVAILABILITY OF THE ALKALI PRESENT IN THE AGGREGATE, ROCK TEXTURE, AND PARTICLE SIZE. THESE BECOME IMPORTANT IN JUDGEMENTS CONCERNING THE STANDARD PERMISSIBLE LIMITS ON DELETERIOUS CONTENT FOR THE VARIOUS LITHIC TYPES. DISCUSSIONS OF THE ARTICLE EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR CONSIDERATION OF CONDITIONAL FACTORS IN CONJUNCTION WITH PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION. EXPANSION FOR LOWER PROPORTIONS OF CHERT AGGREGATE IS MENTIONED IN THIS CONNNECTION.
