CHEMICAL TESTS FOR ALKALI REACTIVITY OF CONCRETE AGGREGATE
IN THE ABSENCE OF A COMPLETELY RELIABLE AND SATISFACTORILY REPRODUCIBLE PROCEDURE TO DETERMINE THE POTENTIAL ALKALI REACTIVITY OF CONCRETE AGGREGATE, QUICK CHEMICAL TESTS CAN BE USEFUL IN PRELIMINARY EVALUATION. HOWEVER, THIS TEST CAN GIVE ANOMALOUS RESULTS WITH CALCIUM, MAGNESIAN, FEROUS CARBONATES, AND SOME HYDROUS MAGNESIAN SILICATES. CHEMICAL TESTS SUCH AS ASTM C289-54T BY THEIR NATURE IGNORE IMPORTANT PETROGRAPHIC FACTORS, POROSITY AND PARTICLE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION. POTENTIAL REACITIVTY IS INDICATED BY CHEMICAL TESTS INVOLVING INTERACTION OF THE AGGREGATE MATERIAL AND ALKALINE SOLUTIONS ONLY IF DISSOLUTION OF SILICA AND REDUCTION OF ALKALI CONCENTRATION ARE BOTH MEASURED.
