PHYSICAL TESTS ON CONCRETE AND MORTAR, WITH DISCUSSION
LABORATORY PROCEDURES DEVELOPED SINCE 1940 TO PRODUCE DATA ON POTENTIAL REACTIVITY OF CEMENT-AGGREGATE COMBINATIONS ARE SURVEYED. MOST TESTS INVOLVE REFINEMENTS OR FURTHER STANDARDIZATION OF THE ORIGINAL MORTAR-BASE EXPANSION METHOD. WETTING AND DRYING TESTS, MASON JAR TESTS, BI-AGGREGATE SLAB WARPING TESTS, TENSILE STRENGTH TESTS, AND DETERMINATION OF THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY ARE MENTIONED. ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION IS INTERPRETED IN TERMS OF LAB RESULTS AND A PHYSICO-CHEMICAL MODEL. A SUBSEQUENT DISCUSSION DEALS WITH MORTAR BAR TESTS AND WITH CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC INDICATORS OF MORTAR BAR EXPANSION.
