FIELD EXPERIENCE WITH ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION IN CONCRETE: CENTRAL UNITED STATES
OF THE SIXTEEN CENTRAL STATES SURVEYED, ONLY FOUR REPORTED ALKALI-AGGREGATE OR CEMENT-AGGREGATE REACTION. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN FROM EXPERIENCE WITH THE KIMBALL AGGREGATE IN NEBRASKA, REPUBLICAN RIVER AGGREGATE IN KANSAS AND NEBRASKA, AND KAW RIVER AGGREGATE IN KANSAS. THE EXPANSIVE REACTION WITH THESE AGGREGATES IS ATTRIBUTED TO CEMENT-AGGREGATE, RATHER THAN ALKALI- AGGREGATE REACTION. THE ADDITION OF 30% DURABLE, ABSORPTIVE CRUSHED LIMESTONE IS RECOMMENDED TO PREVENT CRACKING AND LOSS OF STRENGTH.
