THE APPLICATION OF THE MACKENZIE MODEL TO THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CEMENTS

THE MACKENZIE MODEL FOR A POROUS MATRIX HAS BEEN USED TO EVALUATE THE ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF CEMENT PASTES AND EXTENDED TO DEVELOP A THEORETICAL EQUATION RELATING TO COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL TO THE POROSITY OF THE MATRIX. THE MACKENZIE MODEL EVALUATION OF THE ELASTIC CONSTANTS IS COMPARED WITH THE EMPIRICAL CUBE LAW RELATIONSHIP OF POWERS AND FOUND TO BE AN EQUALLY GOOD REPRESENTATION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA ON CEMENT PASTES. THE EXTENDED MACKENZIE MODEL HAS BEEN USED TO INTERPRET DATA FOR THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CEMENT PASTES AND MORTARS. THIS INTERPRETATION IS FOUND TO COMPARE FAVOURABLY WITH PREVIOUS THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL ANALYSES AND PROVIDES A COMPARABLE FAILURE CRITERION BETWEEN THE MATERIALS INVESTIGATED. /CCR/
