STANDARD NO. 20-30 OTTAWA TESTING SAND IS SPECIFIED FOR USE IN DETERMINING THE AIR CONTENT OF PORTLAND CEMENT ACCORDING TO ASTM DESIGNATION C 185-59 (1967). ASTM COMMITTEE C-1 SUBCOMMITTEES ON AIR CONTENT AND COORDINATION OF METHODS OF TEST ARE CONCERNED WITH SPECIFYING THE PROPERTIES OF TESTING SAND TO MINIMIZE SHIPMENT-TO-SHIPMENT VARIATIONS AND TO PRODUCE BETTER CORRELATION OF AIR CONTENT TEST RESULTS. THIS PAPER CONTAINS RESULTS OF SIEVE TESTS, TURBIDITY TESTS, AIR CONTENT DETERMINATIONS OF SAND-WATER MIXTURES AND 1:4 MORTARS, AND THE INFLUENCE OF WASHING THE SAND ON THESE RESULTS. SOME AUXILLIARY TESTS FURTHER ILLUSTRATE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHIPMENTS OF SAND TO VARIOUS TESTING LABORATORIES. /ASTM/
