IMPORTANCE OF MASS TRANSFER IN DETERMINING THE CORROSION RATE OF ALUMINUM USING POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS.

A rotating disk electrode is used to obtain uniform dissolution of aluminum. Corrosion potentials and corrosion rates are in agreement with the assumption that the corrosion rate depends on the solubility of the oxide film, which is itself dependent on the pH of the environment. Linear polarization resistance measurements and a potentiostatic technique for determining corrosion rates agree with each other. Polarization measurements on aluminum may not be reproducible unless the effect of mass transfer of corrodent and corrosion product is accounted for.
