FURTHER TEMPERATURE AND MOISTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE-CURING METHODS /WITH DISCUSSION/

THE INVESTIGATION PREVIOUSLY REPORTED WAS EXTENDED TO A PAVING PROJECT IN SOUTHERN VIRGINIA TO EVALUATE THE RELATIVE ABILITY TO RETAIN MOISTURE AND CONTROL TEMPERATURE OF FIVE CURING METHODS: (1) CLEAR LIQUID- MEMBRANE SEAL IN A SINGLE APPLICATION, (2) CLEAR LIQUID-MEMBRANE SEAL IN TWO EQUAL CONSECUTIVE APPLICATIONS, (3) WHITE-PIGMENTED LIQUID-MEMBRANE SEAL, (4) WHITE WATERPROOF PAPER AND (5) TAN WATERPROOF PAPER. FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPARISON, SLABS WITHOUT ANY ARTIFICIAL CURING WERE INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT. VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS OR U. S. ARMY ENGINEERS SPECIFICATIONS WERE FOLLOWED WHEN APPLICABLE. ALL LIQUID-MEMBRANE SEALS WERE MECHANICALLY APPLIED BY THE CONTRACTOR AT A CONTROLLED RATE OF 200 SQ. FT. PER GAL. PER APPLICATION. UNDER THE TEST CONDITIONS THE ORDER IN WHICH THE METHODS PROVED THEMSELVES, ON THE AVERAGE, BEST ABLE TO RETAIN MOISTURE WAS: (1) WHITE WATERPROOF PAPER, (2) TAN WATERPROOF PAPER, (3) WHITE-PIGMENTED LIQUID-MEMBRANE SEAL, (4) DOUBLE CLEAR-MEMBRANE SEAL, (5) SINGLE CLEAR-MEMBRANE SEAL, AND (6) NO CURE. RECORDS INDICATE THE AVERAGE ORDER OF EFFECTIVENESS TO MAINTAIN LOW AND UNIFORM TEMPERATURES TO BE (1) WHITE WATERPROOF PAPER, (2) TAN WATERPROOF PAPER, (3) WHITE-PIGMENTED LIQUID- MEMBRANE SEAL, (4) CLEAR LIQUID-MEMBRANE SEAL, (5) NO CURE, AND (6) DOUBLE CLEAR-MEMBRANE SEAL. AS IN THE PREVIOUS INVESTIGATION, NO ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CORRELATE THE DATA TO THE QUALITY OF THE CONCRETE, BUT IT WAS FOUND THAT, AS EXPECTED, THE PERCENT OF MOISTURE VARIED INVERSELY AND LINEARLY WITH THE PERCENT MOISTURE LOSS. /AUTHOR/
